New Here?

We are so glad you decided to visit Community Worship Center! We know how difficult it can be to visit a new church and not have any direction. To help make your experience better, we compiled this list of the most frequently asked questions a guest of ours might have. If you have more questions please contact us. Always happy to hear from you!
Who are we?
We are Community Worship Center Church of the Nazarene. We are a Brooklyn-based church of believers who live by the teachings of Jesus Christ. We believe that that Jesus not only spoke the truth in His earthly ministry, we also believe in committing our lives to Him (John 3:16). We seek to become Christlike disciples and share our faith with others (Matthew 28:19-20). As part of traditional Christianity, we understand that God created all people with the same intention: Each one should have a loving relationship with God that will last for eternity (John 3:16; 1 John 1:3). When we have such a relationship, God intends for us to become more loving, patient, and self-disciplined; in short, we are on a journey toward a God-shaped life (2 Corinthians 3:18; Galatians 5:22-23; 1 John 3:2).
Who is Jesus?
Jesus is a name that has been the source of controversy for thousands of years. Did he ever exist? Was he really the Son of God? Did he truly come back from the dead? Here are the facts: Jesus of Nazareth was born to a Jewish family during the early days of the Roman Empire. During his short life on earth, he preached to the masses about God's unconditional love and performed many miracles such as walking on water (Matthew 14:22-23), healing the sick (Luke 5:12-16), and giving sight to the blind (John 9:9-11). After being betrayed by one of his own followers (Luke 22:47-53), Jesus was captured by Roman soldiers, beaten, and ultimately nailed to a cross where he died (Matthew 27:32-56). His death was more than a simple execution. Jesus willingly gave up His life to make it possible for us to have a restored relationship with God (Colossians 1:21-23). But that's not the end of the story. On the third day after his death, Jesus rose triumphantly from the tomb he was held in (in which he was held) (Mark 16) - proving that He not only was the true Son of God, but that was the true Messiah prophesied by the Jews centuries before (Isaiah 53:3-7). Only through faith in him are we saved.
What does it mean to be 'saved'?
We, like other Christians, use the term "salvation" to mean turning from wrong actions, receiving God's forgiveness, committing ourselves to God, and living as God directs. Salvation comes from the word "save." Jesus declared that He came to "save the lost" (Luke 19:10). But 'save' us from what? Well, according to the Bible, we are all "sinners" in that we have disobeyed God (Romans 3:23). Before Jesus' death and resurrection, God's followers had to sacrifice offerings (such as goats and lambs) in exchange for forgiveness (Leviticus 9:3-4). This was a very crude way of apologizing to God for your wrongs because the blood of animals was only enough to temporarily satisfy the debt of our sins. Jesus, however, was God in flesh (John 1:1 ,14; Col. 2:9), and only God can satisfy the requirements of a perfect life and perfect sacrifice that cleanses us of our sins. The reason Jesus had to die for our sins was so that we could be wholly forgiven and have an opportunity to go to heaven to be with the Lord (John 1:29). Jesus Christ was the ultimate sacrificial substitute once for all time (Hebrews 7:27) and is now the only bridge between God and mankind (1 Timothy 2:5).
How can I be saved?
Imagine running a marathon. Anyone who's ever done one knows the easiest part is to start but the hardest part is to endure the course and reach the finish line. This is the perfect illustration for our Christian life. The journey towards salvation isn't really a journey at all. It's actually the starting point of a brand new life with Jesus Christ. Just like a marathon, expect the journey to be challenging but if you endure to the end, the rewards outweigh anything you could ever imagine! Here's how to be saved:
  1. See that God loves you (John 3:16)
  2. Accept that you are a sinner (Romans 3:23)
  3. Verify that Jesus Christ died and rose for your sins (Romans 5:8)
  4. Enter ask God for forgiveness from your sins through the blood of Christ (Proverbs 28:13)
  5. Declare Jesus Christ as your Savior (Revelation 3:20)

Will you pray this prayer?
'Lord Jesus, I want to have life. I know that I have sinned. I need Your forgiveness and pardon. I believe that You died and rose again for my sins. I now accept You as my personal Savior. I will forsake my sinful life. I know that Your grace and power will enable me to live for You. Thank You, Jesus, for saving me and for giving me a new life.'

If you prayed this prayer, by faith you are saved! What a great start to the beginning of your new life! Remember that this is only the start. For help with living a meaningful life in Christ, we encourage you to find a good Bible-based church (maybe you would consider ours?) where you can grow in faith and in turn help others to grow as well. Get a Bible (we recommend the New International Version) and start exploring the Word of God (we recommend starting with the Book of John). Go ahead and tell your family and friends -- salvation was never intended to be kept a secret. Most importantly, spend time with God everyday through prayer. Remember, its through prayer that good things happen. We are so excited for you!

What are your service times?
We have several services throughout the week which you can attend.
  • Sunday Morning Prayer at 8am
  • Sunday School at 9:30am
  • Sunday Worship Service at 11am
  • Tuesday Prayer Service and Bible Study at 6:30pm

How long is your sunday service?
Our worship service runs about 2 hours. We hope you'll be having such a good time that you'll forget to keep track of it!
When going for the first time, is there anything special I need to do?
If this is your first time visiting us, we ask that you please go to Guest Services in our Church Lobby. Our ushers would love to connect with you, get your name, and help you find a seat. We would also like to publicly acknowledge you at a special point during the worship service. This is not to embarrass you, simply to welcome you to the church and allow our membership to greet you. We know that you have many options as to where you could spend your Sunday morning but we are honored that you would choose to spend it with us!
How should I dress?
Comfortably! God doesn't care if you're wearing a business suit or jeans and a T-shirt. His policy is “come as you are.”
What are your services like?
Our services are all about worship. We believe that every person (regardless of age, race, or background) should praise God with joy and thanksgiving for every good thing He has done. Music provides a great platform for everyone to engage in meaningful worship and we do so through a mix of contemporary songs and traditional hymns. We believe that prayer is the single most effective weapon on the spiritual battlefield and we make prayer a focal point of our services. We preach the Bible here and whether the Word of God is brought by our Pastor or a carefully vetted minister, the preaching is always clear, relevant, illustrative and easily applied to your life. We take the planning and production of each worship service very seriously and we are constantly improving it to meet the changing needs of the people. Why? Our reason is very simple: We want to facilitate an environment where you can personally connect with God.
Is there parking?
We have a parking lot across the street from our church. You can enter the lot from the corner of Bedford Av. and Madison St. For more information about directions or parking options, click here.
Do you have children’s programs?
While we feel our Sunday Worship Service is suitable for all ages, we understand that your little ones may need to learn about Jesus at their level. Therefore, we provide Children's Church service immediately after our Family Prayer. This program is appropriate for children ages 2-11. Children's Church is a safe, clean, and FUN environment for your children to grow and learn while you are in service. Each age group is in an environment that is catered to their unique stage of development. We actually believe that your kids will enjoy themselves so much that they’ll end up bringing YOU back to church! Your child’s safety is our highest priority and so we require each of our Children's Church volunteers to undergo a background check prior to being involved.
what about babies and toddlers?
We have a nursery on our bottom level that's fully stocked with changing tables, cribs and toys to keep your little one entertained while you enjoy the worship service on our close-circuit television. You are also free to leave your child in the care of one of our wonderful caretakers.
Do you have a youth program (12-18 years old)?
The youth meet weekly on Fridays at 7pm. On Sundays all children 12 years old and older join us in the main worship service.
What is The Church of the Nazarene?
Great question! Community Worship Center is a proud member of the Church of the Nazarene. The Church of the Nazarene is the largest denomination in the classical Wesleyan-Holiness tradition. Nazarenes believe that God calls Christians to a life of holy living that is marked by an act of God, cleansing the heart from original sin and filling the individual with love for God and humankind. This experience is marked by entire consecration of the believer to do God's will and is followed by a life of seeking to serve God through service to others. Like salvation, entire sanctification is an act of God's grace, not of works. Our pursuant service to God is an act of love whereby we show our appreciation for the grace that has been extended to us through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Please visit nazarene.org for more information about The Church of the Nazarene.
